Split it into two equations:

x - 2 = 6

and

-x + 2 = 6

x - 2 = 6

Add 2 to both sides:

x = 8

-x + 2 = 6

Subtract 2 to both sides:

-x = 4

Multiply -1 to both sides:

x = -4

So x = 8 and x = -4.
