Early man told stories to explain the world around him. What were those stories like?

I believe these stories were just myths that were passed around from one to another. I clearly don't understand the question, because myths and tales were spread from the earliest of ages to now. 

I assume the stories were just about the ways of life, the surroundings, trees, grass, etc. Anything one could presume as real.
