Exponents in small terms "shorthanded" because of there repeated multiplication of the same thing but by itself.
The star * symbol is used as the multiplication symbol. But when solving problems using algebra, it is often important to be able to multiply algebraical terms that have variables.
I hope this helps you out ! :)
