The best way to get the perimeter is by adding the sides.

[tex](x ) + (2x + 5) + (6x - 17) + (3x - 2)[/tex]
From there, you'd simplify. Due to the addition property of equality, you'd be able to put any of these together.
[tex](x + 2x + 6x + 3x) + (5 + ( - 17) + 2)[/tex]
(Variables plus variables and whole numbers plus whole numbers)
